What was your childhood dream? Who did you want to be like?
Oh to be young again. I was very blessed to have a very joyful childhood, filled with love, toys and encouragement. Now, at a young age I became in love with music and dancing, sadly I am not even close to being in touch with this childhood dream of mine (thank goodness some people might say) but I wanted to be a “fly girl”! I used to watch, In living color religiously and was fascinated by the pretty girls dancing so cool. I used to watch it in my room and try to learn the dances through every episode. This got to the point where I made up my own dances that my Mother may have walked into me doing. She encouraged my passion for dance and my moves if that’s what you want to call them. It got to the point where I would write to Mariah Carey on a regular basis! She would respond through fan mail that I insisted she typed up herself.
I sat with my boom box in my living room listening to my Salt n’ Pepa tape and learned every word to the whole album. My parents were not happy about this but that didn’t stop me. I taped the dances and since I had my own TV and VCR in my room, rewind was my favorite button. I would not move on until I knew the entire dance. To this day I have SHOOP offs with people (Jared) because I know every. single. word. to that song as well as the album.
I then became infatuated by the legendary (to me) TLC. Haha, Chilli, T-Boz and Left Eye. I had an entire tape that I made dedicated to the group of their interviews, their videos, their performances on the VMAs. I was in love with everything about the group. Chilli was ok, but I loved T-Boz the most and Left Eye’s raps are still fully embedded in my head. This is the entire dance I learned that my Mother made me perform one Thanksgiving! Ha, it was so embarrassing but I worked my bum off to learn this dance, beginning to end.
Yes, every move. I would use a chair or a couch to jump off of in the beginning like they all jumped off of the stage. I choreographed pretty much all of the talent shows I was in. I really wanted to be a dancer. I loved it so much.
I was so devastated when Left Eye passed away! So sad, I will never forget that day. My mom told me like she was telling me one of my friends passed.
I really wish I still had that passion just for fun! Once out on the town, or weddings I am unstoppable! Speaking of weddings I was just at one this past Friday and I danced the entire “Bye, Bye, Bye” dance and the groom said it was one of his funniest memories of the night! I still got it! So that was a fun memory to share.
What was your dream as a child? What was your first CD you bought?
I purchased the first Brandy and Monica CD at the same time as my first CD purchase!
